The Abomination of Pride
|
|
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:10-12) Only when we truly grasp the reality of our own unworthiness will we be able to stop judging others. Of course, pride is the root of all unrighteous judging. We naturally think much too highly of ourselves than we ought to. It is only when our hearts grasp the notion of our human filth and the “insanity” of God actually extending His hand out to us, do we find this wonderful truth. Paul’s citation of Psalm 14 to his Roman brothers and sisters can not be any clearer. God’s Word takes all notion of man’s pride and casts it to depths unknown. Our unworthiness can be likened to our distance from the farthest known planet in our solar system. Is a man in China any closer to Pluto then a man in America? Is a man on our moon any closer to Pluto than a man in America? The truth is that it’s completely irrelevant. The distance from Earth to Pluto is so far away (numerous light years) that it is besides the matter. That is how it is with us. We are so immensely far away from God’s glory and goodness that it is useless to even make such comparisons. One not only shouldn’t have pride, one can’t have pride. It is an abomination to God, the entire Gospel of grace and the pouring out of our Lord Jesus’ blood. It is ironic that man can have this false pride when Christ Jesus Himself chose to let go of the fact that He was God! Jesus, the only one who can have pride, chose to be humiliated as He was crucified. If Christ took no pride in Himself, how then can we take pride in ourselves? Let’s not trivialize God’s grace. Let us cast down our pride and remember our unworthy nature. Let’s remember instead the grace and mercy God poured out for us in Christ’s blood. |
